The Main Event: Charcoal-Grilled Kanpachi
The undisputed star of the tray was the charcoal-grilled Kanpachi (Greater Amberjack). Cooking over open charcoal gives the fish an incredible, smoky aroma and an exquisitely crispy skin. The flesh itself was thick, juicy, and rich in natural oils, balanced beautifully by the mountain of refreshing grated daikon radish served on the side.
A Symphony of Side Dishes
- Marinated Tuna (Maguro no Zuke): Beautifully glossed in a savory soy marinade, topped with green onions and a kick of fresh wasabi. It practically melted in my mouth.
- Simmered Kombu and Soybeans: A comforting, classic side dish with a gentle sweetness that anchored the meal.
- Mentaiko (Spicy Cod Roe): A vibrant dollop of salty, spicy umami. Just a tiny bit of this on the hot, fluffy white rice is pure perfection.
- Japanese-Style Pickles: Crisp, tangy, and refreshing—the ultimate palate cleanser between rich bites of the grilled fish.
- Mushroom Miso Soup: Deeply savory and packed with earthy mushroom flavor, warming me up from the inside out.
The Perfect Finish
To wrap up this spectacular feast, the meal included a refreshing green tea served in a charming, small metallic teapot (kyusu). Pouring the hot, vibrant tea into the cup at the very end washed everything down beautifully, leaving a crisp, clean aftertaste.
If you appreciate the art of traditional charcoal grilling and a meticulously curated lunch tray, Aoyama Ototo is an absolute must-visit. I'll definitely be back to see what else they're grilling up!
